A Uniform CO Survey of the Molecular Clouds in Orion

چکیده
We report the results of a new large scale survey of the Orion-Monoceros complex of molecular clouds made in the J = 1 → 0 line of 12 CO with the Harvard-Smithsonian 1.2 m millimetre-wave telescope. The survey consists of 52 288 uniformly spaced spectra that cover an area of 432 deg 2 on the sky and represent the most sensitive large-scale survey of the region to date. Distances to the constituent molecular clouds of the complex, estimated from an analysis of foreground and background stars, have provided information on the three dimensional structure of the entire complex.

Comparison of CO Line and Far-Infrared Continuum Emission as a Diagnostic of Dust and Molecular Gas Physical Conditions: I. Motivation and Modeling
Determining temperatures in molecular clouds from ratios of CO rotational lines or from ratios of continuum emission in different wavelength bands suffers from reduced temperature sensitivity in the high-temperature limit. In theory, the ratio of far-IR, submillimeter, or millimeter continuum to that of a CO (or CO) rotational line can place reliable upper limits on the temperature of the dust ...
متن کاملA Spitzer/IRAC Survey of the Orion Molecular Clouds
We present initial results from a survey of the Orion A and B molecular clouds made with the InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. This survey encompasses a total of 5.6 square degrees with the sensitivity to detect objects below the hydrogen burning limit at an age of 1 Myr. These observations cover a number of known star forming regions, from the massive star formi...
متن کاملThe Spitzer Space Telescope Survey of the Orion a and B Molecular Clouds. Ii. the Spatial Distribution and Demographics of Dusty Young Stellar Objects
We analyze the spatial distribution of dusty young stellar objects (YSOs) identified in the Spitzer Survey of the Orion Molecular clouds, augmenting these data with Chandra X-ray observations to correct for incompleteness in dense clustered regions. We also devise a scheme to correct for spatially varying incompleteness when X-ray data are not available. The local surface densities of the YSOs ...

We present an analysis of wide-field infrared extinction maps of a region in Perseus just north of the Taurus-Auriga dark cloud complex. From this analysis we have identified a massive, nearby, but previously unrecognized, giant molecular cloud (GMC). Both a uniform foreground star density and measurements of the cloud’s velocity field from CO observations indicate that this cloud is likely a c...
متن کاملComparison of CO Line and Far-Infrared Continuum Emission as a Diagnostic of Dust and Molecular Gas Physical Conditions: II. The Simulations: Testing the Method
The reliability of modeling the far-IR continuum to CO J = 1 → 0 spectral line ratios applied to the Orion clouds (Wall 2006) is tested by applying the models to simulated data. The two-component models are found to give the dustgas temperature difference, ∆T, to within 1 or 2K. However, other parameters like the column density per velocity interval and the gas density can be wrong by an order ...
